Participant Reflections

I had read my CPF annual statement every year for fifteen years without properly understanding the Life payout illustration section. After the third week of the programme, I could actually read the table. That is the clearest way I can put it. I could read it and understand what it was telling me.

What I appreciated most was that nobody tried to tell me what to do with my money. Sandra and the group helped me understand what the SRS documentation was actually describing, and then I could decide what I wanted to do about it on my own terms. That felt respectful in a way that other finance events have not.

I attended the Family Finance Conversations workshop with my wife. The scenario cards were genuinely useful — they gave us a structure for conversations we had been circling around for a couple of years. The workshop itself was quiet and well-paced. Nothing felt rushed.

Even with my work background, I found the document workshop useful. The section on reading insurance annual statements was something I had never thought to break down so methodically. Margaret's annotations in the sample reader were thorough and easy to follow. I have gone back to the booklet three or four times since.

I joined the ten-week programme after seeing information about it at my community centre. The weekly reading was manageable alongside my job. I cannot say I understood everything — some of the CPF material is genuinely complex — but by the end of the programme I understood considerably more than I had at the start, and I knew which terms to look up when I needed to.

The document workshop was exactly what I needed — not a seminar about what to do, but a practical session on how to read what arrives in the post. I found the mortgage paperwork section particularly helpful. I had signed a mortgage refinancing document two years ago and not fully understood what I had signed. I do now.

Three Accounts in More Detail

The Starting Point

A 56-year-old civil servant approaching voluntary early departure had received a CPF projection letter and found the terminology — particularly around "enhanced retirement sum", "payout eligibility age", and "draw-down rate" — difficult to interpret despite multiple readings.

The Programme Experience

She joined the Late-Career Reading Programme and worked through the CPF chapters over the first four weeks. Group discussion helped her understand the relationship between the different sum tiers and how payout illustrations are structured. She noted the glossary card as particularly useful for ongoing reference.

Where Things Stood After

By the programme's end, she described being able to read the original CPF letter and understand what each section was communicating. She sought independent advice for her specific situation — equipped with vocabulary she now had — and said the advice session itself was far more productive for having done the reading first.

The Starting Point

A couple in their early fifties had been receiving different pieces of mail about their household finances for years — insurance reviews, CPF statements, bank correspondence — and had no shared vocabulary for discussing them. Each conversation tended to end in uncertainty.

The Programme Experience

They attended the Family Finance Conversations Workshop together. The paired scenario exercises gave them a structure for the kinds of conversations they had been having informally. Rajan's facilitation kept discussion at the vocabulary level rather than the decision level, which they both described as useful.

Where Things Stood After

Both described having a clearer shared vocabulary after the weekend. They used the scenario cards at home in the weeks following the workshop. Neither felt a decision had been made — but both felt better equipped to have the conversations when decisions did need to be reached.

The Starting Point

A 49-year-old who works in retail had accumulated a folder of household documents — bank statements, an insurance annual review letter, and old CPF correspondence — which he kept but never read carefully because the terminology felt inaccessible.

The Programme Experience

He attended the Personal Document Reading Workshop. The Saturday section on bank statement structure and Sunday's work on insurance annual statement sections were both directly relevant to documents he had at home. He appreciated that the sample documents used in the workshop looked like the real documents.

Where Things Stood After

He described going through his document folder at home the following week and being able to read most of what had previously felt opaque. He kept the vocabulary booklet with the folder. The main change he noted was that he no longer set the documents aside — he now read them when they arrived.
